I Can't Help It!

I Can’t Help It!

Acts 4:20
For we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard.

We live in a time where people don’t want to hear about God like they used to. If they had their way, some of the people in the world would issue you a gag order to shut you up. Here in Memphis, TN the city council is facing a possible lawsuit by an atheist organization for having prayer before the council meetings. On occasion, I have been invited to invoke God’s presence before the business of the City. The Freedom from Religion foundation threatened to sue the city council members if they continue to allow prayer at meetings. It seems to be in order that the city leaders would want God involved with the business of the city. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchmen stand guard in vain. Psalms 127:1

The Apostle Peter and John were thrown in jail after they healed a man that had been crippled for 40 years. They caused such a stir in the city that the city leaders and officials asked them to stop talking about Jesus. The Sanhedrin, a religious council, wanted the Apostles to shut up and stop talking about Jesus. Today, it’s the non-religious that want us to stop talking about Jesus but it was the religious in Peter’s day that wanted them to stop talking about Jesus. Peter responded to their demand by saying, “it’s better for them to obey God than men.” Peter said, “We can’t help but to talk about what we have seen and heard. We can’t help it!”

What is that you can’t help talking about?! If God has done anything for you, you can’t help it! If Jesus has healed your body, you can’t help it! If God has worked a miracle in your life, you can’t help it! This is why you can’t help it:

  1. When you’ve had a life changing experience from the inside out you can’t help it. Whenever Jesus would heal people he would tell them not to say anything but they couldn’t help it. Jesus didn’t want them to be ashamed of what he had done, he just knew people. He knew his time was not yet fulfilled to be crucified and all haters want to do is kill you when you no longer follow the status quo. But now that Jesus has fulfilled his mission, you got to tell it!
  2. When you’ve heard the word of God, you can’t help it! Jeremiah said, “When I said I would no longer speak of God, his word was like fire shut up in my bones.” You can’t hear the word of God and not want to say something. You can’t help it!
  3. When other people are in danger of losing their souls. Peter said, “It’s better for us to obey God than man.” When people are in need of salvation, you can’t help it!
Dear God,

I will not shut up. You’ve been too good and I can’t help but to talk about what I’ve seen and heard. Use me today to tell somebody about the goodness of Jesus. Somebody needs to hear this. I can’t help it!

In Jesus Name,

Amen
